Less meetings, more doing

You wake up on a Monday morning, look at your calendar and realise that you have pretty much back to back meetings all day or even worse a whole week of them, then throughout the day you get bombarded with emails. This isn’t fun and it’s hard to make progress on achieving key business goals when your days are structured in this way.

With the decline of ad networks that’s certainly helped if you work in display advertising, but there are still plenty of sales houses out there who are targeted on how many meetings they have, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as long as the supplier is providing benefit which is in demand. Another end of the spectrum is email tennis or getting relentlessly bombarded across multiple internal chat programmes which could be resolved in a fraction of the time by a quick face to face discussion.

It all depends on what the business structure is ie. If you work in a small office and therefore depend on external emails and meetings then that’s fair enough, but if you work in an office which offers full service or even cuts across the main functions, then try just getting up and popping over to discuss face to face with your work colleagues and after a while you’ll realise how much time you save rather than continuing with the email tennis or setting up meetings.

A huge benefit of face to face adhoc discussions or even quick huddles is that it gets things done much quicker rather than unnecessary delays even if it means popping back if they’re not there. Another benefit is putting a face to the name as you never know when you might need to call in a favour and it’s much easier when you genuinely know them.

A couple of things which businesses can do to aid face to face adhoc discussions is having a desk location plan and name tags on desks, but when Monday morning starts again, try culling as many meetings as you can and before getting involved in email tennis with someone in the office, pop over and say hi and you might find yourself with a lot more time on your hands to focus on being able to get the bigger things done.
